Psalm 90:12
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.
12
Quite a few years ago, I read an interesting article in Reader’s Digest. I do not remember the title of the article or the author’s name, but I do explicitly remember the article’s content. It left an imprint, an impression that I have not forgotten. The author had surveyed individuals who had reached advanced age, and the article featured their responses. One of the questions asked by the interviewer had to do with regret. What did these individuals, who’d been blessed with long life, most regret?
They responded that their greatest regret was simply trudging through each day. In hindsight, they realized precious time with their children, spouses and loved ones just went … and now those years were behind them. The fleeting time wasn’t appreciated as they would have liked. Their older selves wished they’d taken more time just to be fully present in each moment.
This year for Lent, I decided to give up scrolling on my phone. I must say this “sacrifice” is much harder than any food I’ve ever given up over the years! Apparently I have a constant need to be informed, to scroll my news apps in case I’ve missed something. It’s a bad habit. How is time with God and others diminished by my need to fill idle moments with scrolling? I am missing the moment!
The psalmist advises us to number our days, and in doing so to gain a heart of wisdom. Let’s strive to treat each day as the gift that it truly is! May we be mindful of our interactions with those around us, and with God. … May each day bring a heightened awareness of just how special it is to live “moment by moment.”
Blessings,
Diana
