Genesis 2:

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

Our focus in Youth Sunday sessions each week follows the Lectionary. This Sunday, we delved into Genesis 2, a recounting of creation.  We focused on two aspects of this story, in particular.

Our first pause in reading Genesis 2 was on man’s God-given relationship with animals. God tasked Adam with naming each of the animals. What fun that would have been!  And how “personal” that became to Adam as he was introduced to each creature.

Humanity’s track record with caring for the earth, and the animals within it, isn’t exactly glowing. Beyond the obvious household recycling, our youth session focused on other, less obvious, ways in which we can leave a positive imprint on our earth.

We also discussed our views on the literal creation story itself!  Did God really create the earth in six days? Was it simply “spoken” into being?  In our faith journey, we acknowledged that there is certainly leeway to embrace both science and creation.  Faith closes the gap between what we know – and the miracle of our earth that simply cannot be explained.

Either lense you look through, our world is one amazing miracle. How can we better care for our tiny slice of it? Opportunities to become a stewart of the earth are everywhere! And, those opportunities become a lifestyle as conscientious acts to better care for our earth become habits.

Where can you begin today?

Blessings,
