Psalm 46:10 – Be still, and know that I am God …
At St. John’s we’ve been challenged to establish a word for the year. Instead of making one or more New Year’s resolutions, we are challenged to select one word that will inspire us in the coming year. I’ve tried this approach for several years now, and for me, it truly seems to work better than making a specific set of resolutions. Your chosen word becomes your mantra, and speaking it often reminds you of your desired focus. The word “intentional” was my chosen word several years ago. I found it to be very helpful as I more “intentionally” planned my day and created sustainable goals.
My word this year is “still” as I feel the Holy Spirit challenging me to slow down, to soak in silence. After a very busy season of parent care, I feel God’s tug to just breathe. The verse above reminds us that in being still, we begin to recognize and know God. When my own spiritual path feels stale and hollow, perhaps I am in need of stillness to revive it back to life! Busyness can breed fevered activity and impressive results – but only for a time. Running at full throttle eventually leads to burnout, resentments, and paralysis. We all need a balanced time for renewal and deep, mental cleansing. Be still.
What word is God laying on your heart for this year, for this season of your life? Prayerfully submit to our Lord your request for a focus word. Where are imbalances that you need to address? If you are so inclined, add your chosen word to our Star Word Board right beside our coffee station in the lobby area. It is inspiring to see the variety of words that have already been placed there!
Dear Lord, you emulated stillness in prayer and meditation throughout your earthly ministry. Could you have faced the challenges put before you without that time of quiet? I think perhaps not! May we gather strength for our daily challenges, great and small, by creating that still space within our day – our own holy space of quiet, of stillness.
Blessings to all in the week to come,
Diana
