Colossians 3:23 Whatever work you do, put yourself into it, as those who are serving not merely other people, but the Lord.  (CJB)

This verse was used a lot on me when I was growing up!  It was a reminder to give my best in whatever I was tasked to do. No hasty work, or cutting corners!  God was watching, and doing a good job mattered to him, even if I was not keen on digging into the assigned task.

Yesterday, as part of our UK tour, we visited the Titanic museum in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The detail that went into each phase of the ship’s construction – from drafted prints, to constructed mini models, to the final ship masterpiece – it seemed as if nothing was overlooked.  As we traveled through the ship’s construction phases in the museum, it was obvious that precision mattered. Best efforts were put forth, and the end result was a magnificent sea vessel!

However, as we journeyed through the museum, into the Titanic’s tragic end, small mishaps of the night were noted. The captain had the ship going “full speed ahead” in spite of iceberg warnings. Also, a crew member who was switched before launch to a different ship accidentally took an important key with him. In his rush off the ship, he failed to leave the key to a room that housed lookout binoculars. Additionally, the code clerks overlooked some very important iceberg warnings from other ships. It was interesting to see how these little factors all weighed into such a huge tragedy.  Small human errors, big human consequences.

Lord, may we always give our best to you and others in the work that we do. May we take the time required to do a task well. Also, may we forgive ourselves for human failings, despite our best efforts.

Blessings to all this week!
