Luke 5:10 James and John, Zebedee’s sons, were Simon’s partners and they were amazed too. Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on, you will be fishing for people.” 11 As soon as they brought the boats to the shore, they left everything and followed Jesus.

James, John, and Simon (later known as Peter) left their fishing nets to follow Jesus.  Can you imagine the reactions of their families?  “You’re doing what? How will you make a living?  Who will pay you?  How will we eat?”

Joining the ministry of Jesus possessed no guarantees for James, John, and Simon. But what about their families?  Scripture tells us little about this side of the disciples’ lives. We can only assume that there had to have been great sacrifices along the way. The ripple effects of full-time ministry reverberated to all who relied on the disciples for comfort and care.

And so it is today…Think of those you know who have dedicated themselves to ministry within our church. Not just those who are paid, but those who sacrifice voluntarily to fulfill a calling from God. I can think of many within our congregation who give much, sometimes to the great sacrifice of themselves and their families.

There can be a certain amount of loneliness in leadership, a feeling of diminished strength from much effort. May we support one another as we seek to serve God – and lift each other up with encouraging words and thoughtful deeds.  Who can you encourage in their ministry this week?

Blessings,

Diana
