Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?
As the New Year’s ball begins to fall in Times Square each year, we usually watch from the warmth of our own home. We count down the seconds with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen, and toast the new year with a glass of champagne. Typically present is our immediate family and dear friend Steph.
While the setting each year is warm and loving, clad in pajamas with light conversation abounding, my inner mood typically becomes anxious. I look back at the prior year and remember unexpected challenges. Each year truly brings its own sorrow and its own joy. Those emotions become intertwined as I remember and quietly reflect. … And then my mind jumps to the present, with the unspoken question of what lies ahead. What will be our challenges in the new year? Who might not be with us till the new year becomes the old?
I think those trepidations about the new year are universal. We live in a “global village” where the joys and sufferings of others are daily in the media. And, we share in joys and prayer needs in church each Sunday. We are not alone in this journey! Whatever the new year holds for us individually and collectively, may we hold onto each other in prayer, word, and deed. Our Lord does not leave us alone, and His light among us shines brighter when we draw near to one another.
Blessings to all!
