Colossians 3:23-24
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,24 since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.
This is a verse that I memorized as a child. It is one of the verses that perhaps impacted me the most in my childhood and youth. Parents and church leaders would remind us that our actions mattered to God, and that in order to please him, we must always give 100%.
The positive part in this message for me was that it helped me develop a strong work ethic. It was also instrumental in my desire to become involved in ministry at a pretty young age. The negative part of this message was the development of perfectionism. After all, if you’re working for the Lord, then anything other than perfect isn’t good enough (or so I felt). I still struggle with that in my work efforts today.
With Labor Day weekend upon us, I’ve reflected on those long ago lessons wrought from this verse. How blessed we are in this country to have the freedom to choose our line of work and give it our all! There is truly joy in selecting a career path or a ministry and seeing its successful conclusion. Many who’ve migrated to this country have done so wanting to work, wanting the freedom to choose their own path.
Thank you, Lord, for the joy of purpose and sense of community that work can bring. May we give the best we can to our work and ministry tasks, yet accept the imperfections that accompany even our best efforts.
Have a blessed Labor Day!
