Philippians 1:3-6  I thank my God every time I remember you.  In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

What was it like to sit in the safety of a secluded room with the disciples after the ascension of Jesus?  I picture quiet pensiveness as the disciples wait, for exactly what, they do not know!  What they do know is that Jesus promised a comforter and guide.  He has not abandoned them.  He promised!  Other than heading out to get food, what did they do while waiting?  No doubt they prayed and reminisced about cherished times in the years they spent with Jesus.  There may have been laughter as they remembered a particularly funny story, an “inside” recollection understood only by those who were there.  Also, fear and uncertainty may have lurked in unspoken silences.  After all, no one knew exactly what would happen next.

When the arrival of the Holy Spirit came, there was no doubt of its presence!  The wind, fire, and miraculous language capabilities transformed hearts on the spot.  The rag-tag team of disciples were emboldened and inner strength infused their spirits.  We don’t know how many were awaiting this transforming arrival of the Spirit behind closed doors.  I can imagine, though, that in addition to the 11 disciples who were Jesus’ steadfast companions, there was certainly Matthias (newly selected disciple) and a myriad of other followers including faithful women who’d been with Jesus as long as many of his original disciples.  The transforming work of the Holy Spirit touched them all as they spread out from Jerusalem to all parts of the known world.  Their work left an indelible imprint that touches us even today.

And … God’s Spirit is still very much present with us at St. John’s!  Yesterday we communed together over a continental breakfast and a talk by Pastor Caroline about Pentecost and the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Next Sunday, the 24th, our focus will continue to be on Pentecost during our service and with a celebratory picnic afterwards.  Please join us!  Many Spirit-infused activities are planned for over the summer, including a deeper look at prayer with special times at our labyrinth, peace pole, and up at St. John’s camp.  Keep your eyes on The Spirit and our E-blast.  Excitement and anticipation is truly in the air!

Dear Lord, as our focus verse prays, may we carry on the good work that you have begun among us.  May we serve and communally worship with the awareness of your Spirit who is always with us.  May we enthusiastically embrace your gift to us, just as your disciples and followers did so many ions ago.

Blessings to all as we enjoy this hint of summer in our weather!Diana

**I would like to do a summer series in my Reflections on people who have blessed our country spiritually and otherwise.  In celebration of our country’s 250th birthday, I would like to showcase a remarkable individual each week – someone who positively served in some capacity for the betterment of humanity and our country’s journey.  If you have any suggestions on who you’d like to see featured, please drop me a note via email or see me in church.  I look forward to celebrating their lives!  This can be a valued family member who served in our military or impacted your life and family in a positive way.  The names don’t have to come from history textbooks, but from you personally!
