Matthew 5:8 – Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. (NIV)
Have you ever met anyone who just seemed to be genuinely kind in the midst of evil? These individuals come across almost as other-worldly. Where we cynically view the world in all its ugliness, they see the acts of goodness that shine through what’s horribly wrong. They exude hope and kindness.
Over the years, I have met individuals that exemplify these traits, and their character shines vibrantly. I enjoy being around them. To me, these individuals have a pure heart. They aren’t carelessly optimistic, but they do see the good in all – and the potential for good in all. I admire their unconditional love of humanity. ALL of humanity!
The verse translation I used above states that the pure in heart will see God. I would argue that the pure in heart have already seen God, and thanks to their testimony, the rest of us see a little more of God as well.
May we each strive to have a pure heart, looking for the best in others and in ourselves. Lord, help us want to do what’s right and pure, even when that path is the harder one to take.
Blessings to all as we enjoy the abundance of summer!
