Proverbs 12:10 – Whoever is righteous has regard for the life of his beast, but the mercy of the wicked is cruel.

I never thought of kindness to our animals in terms of righteousness. But our scripture focus in Proverbs clearly equates kindness to our animals with living a godly life.  I don’t know about you, but it’s pretty easy to be kind to our pets – after all we’ve chosen them! Our kitties are part of our family, and so is our gecko!

Swann and I are visiting with friends in Charleston, SC this week.  This morning I sat in silence on our beach house deck and just soaked in the sounds of summer. I closed my eyes to block out visual disturbances, so I could better hear the choral anthem of nature. Cicadas, crickets, and bird chirps were all simultaneously in song. How better to hear the quiet voice of God than through the chatter of his creatures?

It got me to thinking about showing kindness to the living creatures we share space with. Does that house spider really need squashed?  Could we just scoop it up and release it outside to live another day?  Can we not flood our yard with light at night so the lightning bugs can commune in the darkness?  There are certainly little ways we can be kinder to nature.

How can we all be better caretakers God’s critters this week?  Showing kindness to God’s creatures is a way to express our love of God.

Blessings,
