Matthew 23:11 says that “the greatest among you will be your servant”.  We are fresh off of Holy Week where we’ve listened to references and scripture about Jesus washing the feet of the disciples. Jesus makes it clear to Peter and to the others seated at the table that they must perform menial tasks of servant hood to be a true follower.  Jesus says in John 13:15, “I have set an example that you should do as I have done for you.”

Growing up in church and blessed with parents of faith, I was often encouraged to do “great things for Jesus.”  That left quite an impression. I dreamt of mission trips to faraway lands – kind of like Raiders of the Lost Ark, but with a more Christian slant. People who did “great things for Jesus” in my mind were famous and admired for their leadership. Some of the very famous Christians of our time, however, have had quite humiliating falls from grace. Which brings us back to scripture. … humble, quiet servitude. It’s what Jesus requires, nothing more. Whose feet can you “wash” this week?

May you each spread blessings and find beauty in life’s simple things.
